Those exist in Italy, too! I studied abroad in Siena and if you look, you’ll find shrines of the Madonna in the darkest corners of the medieval little city. They were put up to deter those with heavy bladders from relieving themselves on the streets. They also used to sign contracts in churches so that all those devout Catholics would think twice before going back on their word!
